The Sabkha
Sabkha is an Arabic word meaning low-lying salt flats, an expression now adopted by geologists across the world. Of the three types of Sabkhas found in the UAE, a significant number of interdunal sabkha are found in low-lying basins within the Liwa Desert.
After heavy rainfalls these sabkha flats are flooded for weeks, or even months - replenishing the natural groundwater wells of Liwa until the sun gradually evaporates the rainwater away.
