Sand Roses

Liwa is especially noted for ‘sand roses’, small attractive, hardened, formations of sand that resemble flowers. No two sand roses are the same, and while one might think they are shaped by the wind, the fact is, sand roses are crystallizations formed at the groundwater level.  

Once at the surface, and depending on its size, a sand rose can take up to two years before the wind erosion returns it to sand.
