Arabian Oryx - Al Maha Al Arabiya

Arabian oryx

The Oryx, which once roamed the entire Arabian Peninsula, became extinct as a wild species in the early 1960s.  Oryx are the largest of the Arabian antelopes, able to survive in areas without trees or standing water. They rely on moisture obtained from food and can conserve water through specially adapted kidneys.

Whilst its white-colouring deflects sunlight, its dark-underbelly acts as a barrier against ultra-violet rays.

It is said that the Oryx is a direct decedent of the legendary unicorn.
